Jumpers & Jazzercise

It’s that time of year again where yarnbombers, the community, and a healthy tourist contingent comes out in force to mix, mingle, and make music at Jumpers & Jazz in July. SDRC has worked with community groups and local businesses to bring a jam-packed program with something for everyone.

A festival like Jumpers & Jazz takes a lot of work to bring together, but the value it creates is that providing events and opportunities for interaction is one of the keys to developing healthy communities. Like SDRC, the YMCA values healthy communities, and understands that they are “developed through the relationships between people which are characterised by love, understanding, mutual respect and a sense of belonging.”

The YMCA is Queensland’s leading provider of childcare, fitness, camping, education, hospitality, youth, recreation, and community programs and services. WIRAC joins forces with all the YMCA services across Queensland to fund the benevolent Y-Care (South East Queensland) Inc. Among other services, Y-Care provides facilities and programs for marginalised and disadvantaged young people in need of help, as well as providing affordable accommodation for people who have been without a home.

In addition, local YMCA community programs include Cancer Survivor Program, mYnd Pump.   WIRAC manager, David Jordan, adds, “We support Seniors Week and Disability Action Week (DAW), an annual event for the disabled and special needs community, and have also subsidized individuals and work with the NDIS scheme.  We worked with SDRC to support the Commonwealth Games community activities, we lend support to Citizenship ceremonies, and we provide prizes to fundraising activities in local schools and organisations.”

So, what’s all of this got to do with Jumpers & Jazz in July? Jazzercise, that’s what.

Join with like-minded community members and the world-renowned Jazzercise instructor Ellie Kelso to re-create the moves of days gone by. Ellie has taught Jazz and Jazzercise around Australia, and held the record for the largest Jazzercise class with 139 participants. A Jumpers and Jazz theme is optional: wear your wildest knit leggings and beanies or just some comfy exercise clothing. Ellie will take you through a simple but fun and energetic 45-minute routine, and afterwards the community spirit keeps on giving with free tea and coffee. Maybe this is the time to create an impromptu knitwear fashion parade?

Classes are just $10 each or $7 concession, and are FREE for WIRAC GOLD members. For more information call WIRAC on 4661 7955.
